DIMO Rewards and the DIMO Macaron

One of the most common questions about the DIMO Macaron is how the rewards compare to the existing DIMO AutoPi. This breakdown should answer all the questions.

Refresher — How rewards work

There are two ways to earn DIMO Rewards: 1) Baseline issuance and 2) Marketplace issuance.

Baseline Issuance refers to the concept of rewarding drivers based on how long they've been connected and how they're connected, even if there is no end customer using their data. The goal here is to prime the network by incentivizing drivers to connect the types of cars and stream the types of data that we expect will be valuable to data consumers and app developers in the future.

DIMO users and apps should be rewarded based on the value that they generate to create a more direct link between incentives and optimal behaviors. Those who create the most value for the network should have the largest $DIMO rewards and the biggest voice in its future direction.

Marketplace Issuance refers to rewards earned when data is consumed by developers and partners. When users transact with licensed DIMO apps, such as Tenet, Caribou, and Vehicle Genius, those users receive additional $DIMO tokens and some $DIMO is burned.

To maximize your rewards, you should be keeping your vehicle connected and look for ways to spend in the marketplace.

Baseline Calculation

Baseline rewards are calculated using a points formula. All users earn points based on a bunch of variables, and the number of points you earn dictates your share of that week’s issuance.

One variable of points earned is the type of connection your car uses to connect to DIMO. The type of software and the type of hardware has an impact. The DIMO AutoPi provides a starting point of 6,000 points per week, while the DIMO Macaron provides a starting point of 2,000 points per week. So ⅓ of the rewards.

However, the additional points gained for maintaining your streak — the connectivity of your car over many weeks — is the same for both devices: 1,000 more at each level. So a DIMO Macaron at its maximum streak earns 5,000 points per week, and a DIMO AutoPi 9,000. This means the Macaron improves relative to the AutoPi, earning 5/9ths of the rewards after 36 weeks.

Which device is right?

Both devices allow users to access the DIMO Marketplace and earn rewards, and in this case it’s very dependent on how much of the marketplace you use.
